Cincinnati lifestyle photographer – How to ensure a successful family photo session

For some of you, the thought of planning a successful family photo session might seem surreal in a way; a dream at best.

Trust me, I have 3 kiddos myself.

I. GET. IT.

I’m here to tell you that planning such a successful outcome doesn’t have to be hard, time-consuming, or unattainable. In fact, it can be quite the opposite!

In the 4-ish years I have been in this business, I have learned a few things to help in this department. In fact, I feel quite confident in saying that if you sincerely follow these suggestions, you WILL have a successful photo session filled with pictures you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

Is that too bold to say?

From my pitfalls and journey of an array of family photography experiences, I am here to offer my guidance on how to have the best photo session experience possible – because it can be done!

Put extra thought into your outfit choices.

While it can be done, choosing your photo session outfits the night before isn’t something I’d recommend. Taking the time to figure out what to wear (or what not to wear) long before your session arrives is the first step in photo session success. If you LOVE your outfits and how you look in them, you will more likely LOVE your pictures.

Communicate with your photographer (that would be me ) ahead of time and address your concerns or requests

Communication is KEY when planning for a photo session and if I know exactly what you want & what you are expecting, I can better serve you as a client.

Not only will it help me to prepare ahead of time, but it will give us a chance to get to know each other a little more beforehand – which can greatly effect the photo session outcome!

Rest yourself

The day prior, make sure you get a full night’s rest and drink plenty of water – this will help you give your skin a healthy glow & will make you look more radiant in your photos. I’m not pulling your ear, this stuff is for real!

If you have kids, this step is especially crucial. Unrested kids = unhappy kids. Unhappy kids = not good photos. See where I’m going with this???

Bring snacks & bribes

Snack are a must and bribes, well, I’ll leave that up to you. As a mother and a photographer though, I am not past bribing my kids for good photos, it’s simply a must for me!!! I honestly wouldn’t get near as many cute shots of my kids without muttering the words “chocolate” before I click.

I can’t tell you how many frowns turned into big cheesy smiles when the well-known phrase “We’ll get ice cream…” were whispered from behind me.

Focus on me

This is especially geared to you,  parents. I can’t tell you how many times I have missed a moment because of parents working hard to get their kids to look at the camera or cooperate – all I will say that it’s A LOT.

Focus on me and my direction and let me worry about capturing the right moment with your children. If you are busy trying to make your wee one smile, then I could miss an opportunity when she is smiling and you are not.

Do you see where I am going here?

Just go with the flow, listen to my voice, and don’t worry if your kids aren’t doing what you want them to. It WILL come, I can assure you of that.

Have fun!

This should be a no-brainer, but often I think people get so caught up in having the perfect photos that the fun factor is lost.

If you really have fun, it will show in the pictures. If you are impersonating a robot to get the best pictures, that will show too.

I am really good at capturing personalities, so show it to me & I’ll show it to you!
