I’m sure you’ve seen it before.
The beautiful and angelic new baby, wrapped snug and tight in a wrap and laid gently atop a soft bed of blankets inside a crate full of overflowing fluff. These kind of photos are all the rage right now, so if you don’t know what I am talking about, you must have been living under a rock for the past decade.
Now don’t get my wrong, I oooh and ahh over these gorgeous pictures and highly respect the newborn photographers who do this kind of work, but it’s something that I just don’t touch anymore.
Why, you ask?
Plain and simple: these types of newborn shots don’t mesh with my photography style & approach. While I always include the standard “look at the camera and say ‘cheese’ pose” (old habits die hard I guess), the majority of my work is about capturing real life connections in a fun & laid back way.
This year I threw posed newborn sessions out the window. Goodbye! They aren’t for me or for the Two Blooms brand. Instead, I have replaced them with gentle, baby-led posing and in-home (and on-location outdoor) lifestyle sessions.
That’s great and all, but why should I choose this type of session over those swoon-worthy posed baby portraits, you ask???
I’m going to give you 3 solid reasons.
Reason #1: Your connections deserve to be photographed
Those tiny little flaky fingers grasping at your hands while you gently rock your wee one to sleep in your arms.
How they yawned with comfort when you so gently wrapped them up inside of their cocoon before falling asleep on your chest.
The way you and your spouse look into each others gaze while holding back the uncontrollable joy in your faces as your hearts melt into a big puddle of family mush.
How your toddler carefully kisses the nose of her baby sibling and whispers “I love you” into her ear.
These connections are what I aim for at each and every photo session & it’s something you really don’t want to miss out on.
Reason #2: Your worked hard on that nursery
The most amazing thing about an in-home lifestyle session is that you get to incorporate your little one’s very first room that you slaved over day and night making perfect.
From being rocked in the glider to capturing those sleepy moments in their own crib, your hard work will be fulfilled with the wholeness of baby & nursery coming together.
Reason #3: Lifestyle sessions take less time – and less stress
If you’ve had kids before, then you know what I’m talking about when I say that the first week of your baby’s life is a surreal blur. If you are anticipating your first baby, then you will find this out very soon.
Between the cuddling, doctor visits, healing , and spending those precious hours getting acquainted with your new baby, you aren’t going to want to do much of anything, let alone spend even more time away from home in an exhausting photography studio.
With the lifestyle session, you don’t have to pack up your baby and travel – you get to stay at home and enjoy that couch of yours up until I arrive.
Instead of waiting hours for baby to get settled into the perfect position (the standard posed newborn sessions can range anywhere from 2 to 4 hours – or more!), we keep the atmosphere relaxed and simple and let the magic happen as it unfolds. If there’s no need for a feeding or diaper change, I can be in and our of your hair in 1 hour!
While I realize that lifestyle newborn sessions might not be everyone’s cup of tea, it can be a favorable option when you are ready to incorporate connections and emotion into the photography you invest in.
